When Thiền Meets Lumière brings together essays, haiku, images, and reflections on art, perception, making, memory, and everyday life. Moving between museums and streets, paper and architecture, Cézanne and phở, the book asks what remains when explanation no longer comes first.
When Thiền Meets Lumière is now available internationally through booksellers across North America, Europe and Asia.
What began quietly has now left the hands that made it.
The book is travelling.
Where it goes from here — and what remains in each reader — is no longer entirely mine to know.
That’s all.
This book is a way of seeing.
When Thiền Meets Lumière takes shape through essays, poems, koans, photography, and Sho-E—through encounters with dó paper, Cézanne, phở, museums, streets, rain, light, failure, memory, making, and ordinary life.
The subjects change. The forms change. The seeing remains.
Viet Dung Nguyen brings this attention to a sheet of handmade paper, a painting, a bowl of phở, or a design that refuses to work—looking closely enough that inherited explanations, professional habits, and familiar categories no longer arrive ahead of the thing itself.
Knowledge matters. Experience matters. Mastery matters. But none of them should become a cage.
Across these pages, seeing is not separated from making, thought from material, or tradition from change. A brushstroke can hold years of practice and still remain open to what the paper does. A building can resist the intentions placed upon it. A familiar street can become new again. A work of art can be encountered before history tells us what to see.
This is not a philosophy to adopt or an aesthetic doctrine to follow. It is a living practice of attention.
At its center is a simple possibility: the more freely we see, the less we are condemned to repeat what we already know.
That freedom can change how we create, design, understand, remember—and encounter the world around us.
When Thiền Meets Lumière does not ask the reader to see through someone else’s eyes.
It offers a way of seeing that may free their own.
For artists, designers, makers—and anyone who has ever felt explanation arrive before experience—this book is an invitation to look again.

Viet Dung Nguyen is a writer, designer, photographer, and multidisciplinary artist whose work moves between literature, visual art, architecture, craft, and the experience of making.

He is the author of A Mural of Breath, its French edition La Fresque du Souffle, and When Thiền Meets Lumière. Across fiction, essays, photography, haiku, and Sho-E, his work explores perception, memory, tradition, change, and the quiet knowledge carried by materials and lived experience.
